As a federal research institute and independent higher federal authority under the Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture, the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) focuses on farm animal health and welfare, and on the protection of humans from zoonoses.

At the FLI headquarters Greifswald – Insel Riems we are looking to fill positions as soon as possible within the Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology (IMVZ), the Institute for Novel and Emerging Infectious Diseases (INNT) and a Junior Research Group for

5 Postdoctoral Scientists.

These are full time positions (39 hrs per week) for 24 months as part of the qualification phase.

Work contracts will be according to the labor agreement for civil servants (TVöD). Renumeration up to level 14 TVöD - tariff area east will be based on the fulfillment of requirements defined in the labor agreement.

Tasks:
Successful applicants will work as part of an internal research consortium encompassing 7 work packages focused on the theme „Illuminating virus host interactions of high-consequence zoonotic viruses in vitro and in vivo“, and will investigate virus host interactions of highly pathogenic Filo-, Arena, Henipa-, and Bunyaviruses on the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organism level. The focus of the work will be (depending on the individual work package):

  • rescue of recombinant Filo-, Arena-, Henipa-, and Bunyaviruses
  • characterization of these viruses in vitro using a wide array of methods including classical virological methods, reporter expression analysis, and live cell microscopy
  • identification of interaction partners using cooimmunoprecipitation and mass spectrometry analysis
  • establishment of animal models and characterization of (recombinant) Filo-, Arena-, Henipa-, and Bunyaviruses in these models

Requirements:

  • completed undergraduate  studies (BSc, MSc or Diploma) in biology, human biology, biochemistry, microbiology, veterinary medicine, human medicine, or a comparable subject
  • PhD with a background in virology, molecular biology, cell biology, or animal experimentation

Preferred qualifications (dependant on the work package):

  • experience in working in containment laboratories (BSL4 or BSL3)
  • experience with virological methods in vitro and/or in vivo, particularly using negative sense RNA viruses
  • practical experience with animal work
  • experience in molecular biological, biochemical, and/or cell biological methods, particularly the rescue of viruses by reverse genetics, qRT-PCR, western blotting, FACS, and coimmunoprecipitation
  • experience using modern imaging technologies, particularly confocal fluorescence microscopy, live cell microscopy, and/or ex vivo imaging techniques

Motivation, strong communication and organizational skills, as well as the ability to work independently, but also suitability for team work, are required.

The work encompasses working in security areas, which requires a security assessment according to the Sicherheitsüberprüfungsgesetz (SÜG –German law for security assessments), as well as special protective measures against health risks. Personal and physical suitability is, therefore, absolutely required for these positions.

If requested, the possibilities for part time employment will be assessed based on the specific job requirements.

Applicants with disabilities but with equal suitability will be given priority; they will have to fulfill only the minimum necessary physical requirements for the positions.
