Group of Prof. Dr. Silke Stertz, Institute of Medical Virology

We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to study entry of influenza A viruses in the frame of a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The project aims to compare the entry pathway of conventional sialic acid-dependent entry of human and avian influenza A viruses with the entry route utilized by bat influenza A viruses using CRISPR/Cas9-based genomic screening, super resolution microscopy and live cell imaging.

The project will be carried out at the Institute of Medical Virology at the University of Zurich that provides state-of-the-art research infrastructure, access to core facilities and a stimulating scientific environment ideal for junior researchers to advance their career in academic research.

Qualifications & position:

The position is available from 1st January 2022 or upon mutual agreement. Candidates should hold, or expect to be soon awarded, a PhD in molecular cell biology, virology, or similar. Due to funding restrictions, the PhD degree should not have been obtained prior to 2020. Candidates should have a strong scientific track-record with at least one research publication as first author in a peer-reviewed journal. Experience in mammalian cell-culture and standard molecular biology techniques is expected. A background in molecular virology, live cell imaging or super resolution microscopy is desirable, although not essential. The successful candidate will have excellent oral communication and writing skills (in English), a curiosity-driven attitude, and will demonstrate enthusiasm, flexibility and independence. A competitive salary will be offered.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

The application should contain a cover letter describing the motivation for this position, a CV including a list of publications and contact details for at least two referees. The application should be addressed to Prof. Dr. Silke Stertz: stertz.silke@virology.uzh.ch
