S2k guideline "Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CMV infection in pregnant women and congenital CMV infection in newborns and children"
02/04/2025
Under the leadership of the Society of Virology e.V. (GfV) and the coordination of Professor Susanne Modrow and Dr. Rangmar Goelz, the development of the S2k guideline "Prevention, diagnosis and treatment of CMV infection in pregnant women and connatal CMV infection in newborns and children" (AWMF register number 093-003) was successfully completed and included in the AWMF guideline register.
The final approved version (version 1.0) is now available on the AWMF website at the following link: https://register.awmf.org/de/leitlinien/detail/093-003
Summary
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections do not usually cause illness in pregnant women. If the viruses are transmitted to the child intrauterine, the fetuses can develop various forms of fetal disease. Depending on the phase of pregnancy and the stage of fetal development at the time of the CMV infection, asymptomatic courses are found through to severe fetal diseases, which manifest themselves in the newborns with severe symptoms and affect the development of the children and adolescents for the rest of their lives. As the number of cCMV infections is not systematically recorded nationwide in Germany, it is only possible to estimate the number very imprecisely.
Regardless of this, CMV infections in pregnant women currently cause the majority of infectious diseases of the foetus and newborn: Each year, well over one hundred newborns can be expected to become ill, with considerable burdens also for the parents and the healthcare system.
This S2k guideline describes the currently possible and recommended measures for the prevention and management of CMV infection in pregnant women and the associated cCMV infection in newborns and children. Based on current evidence-based knowledge, recommendations are made for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease as well as the tracking and Funding cCMV-infected children.
The delegate group points out that there may be changes in therapy in the future towards antiviral drugs with fewer side effects.
