Clinical infectious disease management in times of disaster and war.

We cordially invite you to the 4th Symposium on Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases in an International Military Context, which will be hosted by the Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg and take place at the prestigious Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany, from 28 to 30 August 2024. The symposium will focus on the overall topic of “Clinical infectious disease management in times of disaster and war” and will feature discussions on current issues of infectious disease prevention, diagnostics, treatment and management.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Infectious diseases as “aftershocks” of wars and disasters
  • New horizons in clinical infectious disease management
  • Infectious disease management with limited resources and in remote areas
  • Disaster dermatology
  • Posttraumatic infections
  • Infections associated with poor hygiene conditions
  • Antimicrobial resistance
  • Re-emerging infections in humanitarian crises

The presence of armed conflict on European territory has raised awareness of the need for military medical preparedness to respond to infectious disease scenarios that require a unified medical approach. Such preparedness for disasterassociated infection risks includes awareness of current developments and the implementation of state-of-the-art methods and procedures. Military operations and international exercises can lead to the spread of infectious agents such as gastrointestinal parasites, atypically resistant or even multi-resistant bacteria, acute and chronic viral infections, and even rare or emerging tropical pathogens. Knowledge, awareness, and expertise in the fields of prevention, diagnosis, therapy and management of tropical and infectious diseases remain crucial in order to be prepared for these challenges. This is especially true in remote areas or on military vessels.

The established and prestigious symposium in Hamburg offers participants an opportunity to meet with colleagues and friends and to exchange information and ideas. Young colleagues and students are encouraged to join the community of military medical officers who specialise in the prevention, diagnosis, and management of infectious diseases. The relaxed atmosphere of the symposium helps to promote both scientific and collegial dialogue.
