Dear colleagues
dear students,

We are delighted to invite you to the Congress for Infectiology and Tropical Medicine 2026 in Cologne in the beautiful Gürzenich! At the last KIT, we were able to celebrate significant milestones: the 50th anniversary of the DGI and the introduction of the specialist in internal medicine and infectiology, which will further advance our discipline and open up new opportunities in patient care. It is with great pleasure that we are now building on this with the following topics:

These topics await you in 2026:

Artificial intelligence and big data
Artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly important role in our work. AI-based systems can help us improve diagnostic and treatment decisions by analyzing large amounts of data and identifying patterns that human eyes may miss. These technologies offer the potential to significantly increase the efficiency and accuracy of our medical services. It is important to ensure the limitations and risks of AI and to actively help ensure that this tool is used responsibly.

New healthcare reform
The forthcoming hospital reform presents us with new challenges and opportunities. The reform requires us to further optimize our structures and working methods in order to ensure more efficient and high-quality patient care. We must use this opportunity to develop innovative solutions that meet both the needs of patients and the requirements of the healthcare system.

Antibiotic resistance
Combating antibiotic resistance remains one of the greatest challenges in infectiology. The increasing resistance of pathogens to existing antibiotics poses a serious threat to global health. We need to invest more in research and development of new antimicrobials and at the same time implement strategies to reduce antibiotic use and prevent resistance. International cooperation and coordinated efforts are essential to effectively combat this threat.

Tropical diseases, global health and One Health
Infectious diseases as well as poverty-related and neglected diseases know no borders, and their spread is exacerbated by factors such as climate change, urbanization and increasing mobility. By considering and treating human, animal and environmental health together, we can respond more effectively to health threats and strengthen global health with the One Health concept, among others. This emphasizes the close connection between human, animal and environmental health. Interdisciplinary cooperation and an integrative approach are necessary to protect human and animal health as well as the environment globally and sustainably.

Your contribution is important to us!
Help us shape the future and submit your abstracts and symposium ideas on these and many other topics. You will find all information on deadlines and formats on this website from September 2025.
Promoting young talent and gender parity are particularly important to us. We have developed new formats for this. You will also be surprised by our exciting supporting program, which offers both cultural and relaxing highlights. We are convinced that this congress will provide valuable insights and inspiring discussions. Let's use these days to learn from each other, forge new collaborations and shape the future of infectiology and tropical medicine together.

See you in Cologne!
Yours

Prof. Dr. Norma Jung (DGI) and Prof. Dr. Siegbert Rieg (DGI)
Priv.-Doz. Dr. Katrin Mehler (DGPI)
Dr. Dr. Carsten Köhler (DTG) and Prof. Dr. Torsten Feldt (DTG)
