Clinical management of infectious diseases: a critical factor for resilience in times of ongoing conflicts 20th anniversary of the Department of Tropical Medicine of the Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine

We are delighted to invite you to the 5th Symposium on Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases in an International Military Context. This symposium first took place in 2016. It is traditionally held at the Bundeswehr Hospital Hamburg, where it will take place again from 26 to 28 August 2026. It will be hosted by the Department of Tropical Medicine operating in cooperation with the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Centre and the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg. The latter is the National Reference Centre for Tropical Pathogens in Germany.
State-of-the-art approaches are required to prepare and plan risk management associated with infectious diseases in military conflicts and to learn lessons from such events. In addition, large international exercises also bear the risk of spreading infectious pathogens, which can vary significantly from region to region. Knowledge, awareness and expertise in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of tropical and non-tropical infectious diseases are essential to be sufficiently prepared for infectious disease scenarios and special situations such as the handling of infected patients in remote areas or on military maritime vessels.

Interesting topics include but are not limited to:
Infectious diseases in modern conflicts – lessons learned:

  • New developments in the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases
  • Challenges of antibiotic resistance
  • Unusual case reports
  • Skin infections
  • Vectors and vector-borne infections
  • Infections and combat injuries
  • Infectious disease monitoring
  • Infection prevention and control

We are looking forward to seeing you in Hamburg in 2026!
